Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough

Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough

Stephen Joseph Theatre (SJT) is a regional producing theatre with a rich and fascinating heritage. It was established in 1955 by theatrical pioneer Stephen Joseph, who created the country’s first theatre-in-the-round company in Scarborough on the first floor of the public library. Stephen’s primary aim, to encourage new writing by new writers, remains an important part of SJT’s artistic vision today. In 1976 the company relocated to Westwood, on the ground floor of the former Scarborough Boys’ High School, and in 1996 to its current home, previously the local Odeon cinema and extensively redeveloped in order to become a permanent home to SJT.

SJT reaches over 110,000 people all year round with many attending during the world famous summer season of world premieres, produced and made in Scarborough which will often then embark on a tour in the UK and the USA.

SJT programmes a wide ranging offer of visiting productions – drama, music, dance and comedy –alongside film and live streamings from the National, RSC and Royal Opera House, providing access to world class arts to tourists and locals alike.

SJT has an extensive, cross generational, programme of OutReach work, working with, in and for the local community, encouraging everyone to engage with the SJT through projects, courses, classes and work experience.
